In 1916, James C. Hemphill, Sr., AIA founded Hemphill Associates, an architectural firm based in Greenwood, SC. Projects of note include the Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood and many other projects scattered over both Carolinas.  In 1970, James C. Hemphill, Jr., FAIA took leadership of the firm now based in Charlotte, NC. During that time, the firm designed numerous significant projects throughout the southeast including the Strom Thurmond Federal Building and United States Courthouse in Columbia, SC. In 1971, John A. Hemphill, AIA joined the firm to work alongside his father. He took over as president in 1991. In 1998, Frank  H. Randel joined the firm as a Principal. The company name was changed to Hemphill-Randel Associates.

 

Today, Hemphill-Randel is proud of their long-standing reputation of being a client-oriented firm that pays close attention to the client’s budget, needs, and schedule. Eight-five percent of their projects are in the public sector. During the last two decades they have become known as one of the leading firms in justice architecture which includes courthouses, law enforcement centers, county jails, training centers, and 911 centers.
